Institutions move with the herd, too. So if one of them has bought a block, maybe others will follow - driving the price up.

Sometimes. Some individual investors beat institutions. I'd say if you dont beat 90% of all mutual funds, you must improve. But institutions have one thing you don't have: more buying power. Which translates into power to influence the price trend. That's why block trades are worth watching. But I do it sporadically only.
