I would like to be able to have one half of my funds in a short and one half in a long.... (in other words I would like to be able to bet that one stock will outperform the other regardless of where the market goes).

Few people will be interested in this change, but that is no reason to disallow it. I believe it can be permitted without any change in workload, but you will know best.

The relative performance graph is easily obtained in stockcharts.
