"my Dad was born and raised in the south, his background view that you can't leap from a condition where people still alive had been slaves to a condition of total color blindness was realism more than prejudice."

My father-in-law had a similar view....he used to say, "if we give em an inch, they'll take a yard". Now you can guess who the them is. But I used to ask him why it was our right to give "them" anything....why didn't "they" have the same rights as "us" without having to be given them. Who gave those rights to us??? And you father thought that blacks couldn't or shouldn't be able to handle total freedom despite the fact that racial unrest was barely beginning to grow in the 50's, MLK was starting his passive resistance movement and finally was gunned down in 1964... Did he think blacks should have the right to vote or did he think they couldn't handle such responsibilities.
Was it you who said you had a "Mama" living in your house? What were her duties and why did you call her a Mama instead of Miss or Mrs..???

You mention your best friend Roy...was he your best friend thru Jr. High School, High School? Did he go to the same school with you? Did you pal around with him socially in high school?? You seem proud of the fact that Roy's mother gave you a lift to school (which kinda answers my question about where Roy went to school). I'm sure that lift to school didn't raise an eyebrow...weren't blacks often expected to do that as part of there house duties???
I am surprised that Roy attended the same scout camp as you.
I'm surprised blacks were allowed in the BSA then.
