If I understand what you are referring to, you VOLUNTARILY AGREED to have your freedom of speech restricted. You could simply have refused to sign the papers for the clearances. You know it. I know it. Where's the issue?

Perhaps it was a lack of appreciation at the time of exactly what that meant. As the General Counsel told me later...."Legally, you can't publish a book on French cooking without prior approval." Somehow I didn't anticipate that French recipes were a national security related issue.

And Dave has a good point: For all practical purposes, you are no longer an American.
