Ericsson says commited to CDMA, but might merge it

BARCELONA, Spain, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Sweden's Ericsson said on Friday it remained committed to CDMA wireless network technology, the smaller rival of dominant GSM network systems used in Europe and large parts of Asia and the Americas.
Ericsson, the world's largest mobile network maker, is a late entrant to the CDMA market, competing with the likes of Lucent , Nortel Networks and Motorola which have all been struggling with heavy losses.
"We think we can grow on our own in CDMA. We started later so we're somewhat behind but there are lots of synergy opportunities (with GSM-based technologies)," Ericsson's Chief Financial Officer Sten Fornell told a Morgan Stanley investor conference.
However, he did not rule out a merger with one of its CDMA rivals.
"We're not excluding any possibilities to strengthen this in any combination in some way," he said.
Ericsson was one of several companies to win part of a major CDMA network contract in China last month. |
