Nokia's 7210 withdrawn in UK

Lats Friday, UK newssite The Register received a fax from T-Mobile saying it has withdrawn Nokia's 7210 from sale just days after beginning sales of the much anticipated picture-messaging handset.

Nokia spokesman on Monday denied the recall saying that the 7210 model was on sale yet and that Nokia and T-Mobile together had decided that the phone and the T-Mobile network were not compatible enough, yet.

In the fax the mobile operator explains it is withdrawing the 7210 from sale because of "continued instability of the handset" and customer complaints. Early customers report a number of problems, detailed in T-Mobile fax, including a radio interface freeze when the handset appears to be functioning normally but cannot make or receive calls, which most commonly happens when GPRS is activated. There are also intermittent software crashes and failures of the picture messaging delivery.

T-Mobile customers may return their 7210 handsets to retailers, while stores are advised to take the handset off display and remove all point of sale material relating to the product. T-Mobile said it would "review a re-launch of the product in January", providing the technical problems identified with the handset are resolved.

The reported problems with the phone are similar to those cited by mm02 last month when it pulled the release of the 7210, citing problems with the version of the software it has been testing. In an email which to The Register O2 said that they had "identified problems with the current version of the handset (software release 3.09)".

Nokia then confirmed one problem with the phone, an issue with larger pictures sent from a 7650 to a 7210, but said this wouild be fixed in a new software. For the other problems Nokia blamed the O2 network problems.

In the e-mail to The Regeister O2 replied with a list of complaints:

"1) The device will often soft reset when the user is deleting a text message
2) The device will often hang, with no audible or vibrating alert to inform the user of an incoming call
3) The device will intermittently lose network coverage after a cell change
4) The device will show coverage but the user will be unable to make or receive a call
5) Issues with MMS"
