While it's off topic, my opinion on the Trent Lott affair is that it's much ado about nothing...
After all, Strom Thurmond was literally an institution in the Senate, and offering positive "rhetoric" regarding his political career was appropriate...
But most importantly is the fact that the Democrats are disparaging "dixiecrats", which were a group of former DEMOCRATS who switched parties to the republicans.
Thus, they are pointing out that it was THEIR party which was once the haven of such values, including folks like Jesse Helms..

But furthermore, Senator Byrd of W. Virginia, a former Ku Klux Klan member, has made racially tainted statements as recently as last year.
A strong opponent of African American civil rights Byrd was an advocate of the Ku Klux Klan. In 1946 Byrd announced that: "The Ku Klux Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth in West Virginia".

And just last year Byrd made the following comment:
The senator, in a recent Fox news interview, made an ass of himself. More importantly, he disgraced the state he claims to serve so honorably. In the interview, Byrd stated, while expressing his views on U.S. race relations, he had met "white niggers" in his lifetime. The context in which Byrd made this shocking statement was an absurd attempt by the senator to remind us of the great strides our country has made in improving race relations. The Senator's inappropriate use of an offensive racial slur has, for me, had the opposite effect.
So go figure...... It's all a game by the Democrats to get Lott to resign so the Democratic governor of Mississipi will have the chance to appoint a DEMOCRATIC Senator to replace him.
