Recycling methane from a septic tank?? This thread has really gone to great lengths, ecologically speaking. I'd better break out the potpourri!!!

Your spread in Wisconsin sounds idyllic, except those months every year you were a snowman. Don't they do some really exciting ice fishing there? I remember a silly comedy movie about that and it looked pretty cold, except everyone was drunk on beer all the time. I would have drunk Southern Comfort or something warmer instead!!!

I guess everyone is looking for something better, quieter, warmer, cooler, more peaceful, or more exciting!! I hope we all find whatever it is when we are young enough to enjoy it.

Okay, I forgot we do have a toaster! My brother got us one for Christmas. I used to just toast the bread in the oven, on a rack or on a cookie sheet. The broiler works well for toast, also. We have a stove from the '40's, but it has to be lit with matches. I do have electricity, but would sort of like to try living without it sometime. Rising at sunrise with the animals and lingering a bit by candlelight after nightfall sounds very romantic to me.

I would like to take simplicity as far as it is still comfortable. I do like indoor plumbing. I was lying in the middle of a pile of hay in a tiny Elizabethan demonstration cottage at the Renaissance Faire once and realized there is a great sensuality about that kind of life. On the other hand, since I have come to love computers it is a little more difficult to think of actually giving the electricity up.

I am quick to say that if I were ill I would want an MRI or some other very modern diagnostic test yesterday!!! I think that is what I was talking about when I was discussing slowing life down--choosing the real benefits of the time we live in, and appreciating them, but not getting sucked into needing everything that has just been invented/improved because it exists, and picking and choosing a mixed lifestyle that works for you, whether people think you are backwards or eccentric or not!! And some people are not stressed out by being faxable/pageable/emailable with their cellular phones within 12" of them 24 hours a day!!

It's really hard for me to imagine what it is like to live for 33 days without getting above zero once, Del. Could you tell me about it, like how you felt and did it look beautiful and white and surreal outside, and what did you do for all that time?? I don't have much experience of snow.
