Senate GOP to meet next month on Lott's fate

Posted: Monday, December 16, 4:04pm EST

Senate Republican leaders on Monday summoned the rank and file to a meeting Jan. 6 to decide the fate of Sen. Trent Lott as party leader in the wake of a racially charged controversy.
A one-sentence announcement said the meeting was called after consultation with both Lott, R-Miss., and Sen. Don Nickles of Oklahoma, who broke ranks on Sunday and called for new elections.

Under Senate GOP rules, any senator may propose elections once the meeting begins, but no balloting would be held unless a majority of Republicans wanted a new vote.

Still, the meeting clears the way for the possibility of new leadership on the eve of the convening of a new Senate session where Republicans are to take control.

For his part, Lott spent the day preparing for an appearance on Black Entertainment Television, part of an effort to overcome controversy stemming from racially comments he made at Sen. Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday party earlier this month.
