I'm on an "India rant" tonight, so here goes:

Yes India is a democracy (BTW, biggest in the world)
Yes India's early days since independance, was along the lines of a socialist republic.
Yes India paid a steep price for that line of thought.

However (theres always a yeah..but:-) In the last couple years or so, the Indian government is attempting to privatize many "State owned enterprises".

To me, the smell of democracy + capitalism = "Sweet"
