Xilinx Inc. today announced it has taped out the first production silicon to use 90nm processes from its two main foundry partners, IBM Corp. and United Microelectronics Corp.

The parts are customer samples from an FPGA family that Xilinx will introduce in early 2003, said Rich Sevcik, a senior vice president at the San Jose chipmaker.

The company expects to move 90nm production to 300mm-wafer lines in March when equipment is installed. As a result, Xilinx said it will be able to offer 1 million-gate FPGAs for less than $25 by 2004.

"At this level, the price difference between ASICs and FPGAs starts to go away," Sevcik said.
