Bill doesn't act like he drives a Ferrari...
But then again, he seems to like very much his self-selected thinktank of 5 guys in Aspen paid for by Sun, which is even better and quite a bit more expensive, when you think about it <gg>
Seriously, one thing he said in answer to my question was intriguing. I said I didn't see how his thesis of controlling dangerous information would work very well because information is irreversible, so what did he think about pre-countering these anticipated threats? He suggested that the Defense Dept is funding large efforts.
That made an impression, especially after a couple hours examining the unimaginable array of potential future threats that physics and biology may have in store for us.
This was before 9/11. It's clear both efforts need to be made.
Bill's thesis is that it is always easier to create damage than to defend against it. The counter has to be, then, to mobilize MUCH GREATER activity towards the difficult engineering and scientific challenges required to create adequate defenses. These defenses must be much different than the Bill Joy-envisioned tech-threats, and have the intriguing qualities of (a)successfully operating, even if they are publicized, and (b)not useable for offense. A worthy challenge, indeed. |
