Studies say you're wrong.... Callous killers know how easy it is to get away with murder.... And you can certainly see that passion killings would not be affected by any penalty... "So, the death sentence falls in that category, it deters future acts of murder" A deterrent would have prevented the murder in the first place... eg our nukes were a deterrent to the USSR's nukes If they had launched first, it wouldn't have made much difference if they couldn't launch a second time...
