I have to feel sorry for Lott. You know it is obvious he wasn't thinking about segregation or race when he said what he said. IMO, anyway. Plenty of really horrible racial things get said (and are said especially often by minorities), but what Lott said is ONLY a problem if you read a whole bunch of other stuff into it. I saw it as waxing nostalgic for the old days (when women didn't have it good either- and I do NOt think Lott was slamming women).

I have never understood why people in this country like to make up problems where none exist, while ignoring huge systemic problems that DO exist and that could be fixed. Granted, it takes a lot more work to fix the big problems, but maybe we wouldn't have to make up problems to entertain ourselves, if we weren't trying to distract ourselves from huge REAL problems.
