CPI Debuts Lithium-Ion Polymer HEV Battery

Source: PR Newswire [Dec 13, 2002]
Colorado Springs, Colo. — Compact Power Inc. (CPI) has introduced its new Lithium-ion polymer battery (Li-PB) pack developed for hybrid-electric vehicle (HEV) applications at the Electric Transportation Industry Conference and Exposition. According to a CPI release, this development is the result of a $5 million contract between CPI and LG Chem Ltd, and promises to open the door to lighter, more compact, and higher capacity batteries for electric vehicle applications. CPI claims that, when commericialized, Li-PB technology will pack twice the power and energy of the current industry standard nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery, and will offer a cheaper, safer and more environmentally-friendly alternative. With its greater energy and power capacity, Li-PB can sustain heavier and more sustained demand, allowing smaller conventional engines to perform on par with larger displacement non-hybrid power trains. -
