Agreed, I just got the new CDM9500 through Verizon. Very large bright color screen, but crippled by the carrier. Charges for getting new screens, ringtones, data. Information on data access is scattered and unclear on their website. Website doesn't work with some browsers, and has bad links.
Just saw that PCS has an unlimited vision access deal. For about $40 per month.

Here's the basics on the low end Sprint plan, which is $30/month for voice plus $10/month for data(data free for first 3 months, I believe)..

For the $40/month, you get 300 peak minutes, unlimited N&W, free LD, and unlimited data to the handset. You can add unlimited PCS-PCS for $5/month. Adding additional subs to the account - $20/month, extra sub(s) share the peak minutes and get unlimited everything else on the main account.

For ring tones, screen savers & games, additional charges do apply, but sites are popping up with free stuff. For example, the following has free ring tones and screen savers(wallpaper, photo caller ID, whatever you choose to call it or use the images for). They are free and Sprint allows the handset to accept them over the air.

myphonefiles.com

That is just one example. I am hopeful Sprint continues to follow an early AOL model, offering proprietary content but not limiting subs to only their stuff, similar to how AOL slowly embraced the internet over time. What needs to happen next is in the application area, where Sprint is lacking. On the camera side they are moving along quite well, IMO.
