We have all heard the stories of how mean the loggers could be to the new guys and the extent they would go to in scaring the crXp out of the wimpier fellows.

However, it is a little known fact that the early days of forestry were quite wrought with mean prankishness toward even their experienced peers. When they decided one of the crew had become lazy and was "lolly" gagging around on the job, they would basically torment the man to death or until he left the job with his tail between his legs. When one was found actually sleeping behind a bush during the day they would take the bloke and tie him to the top of a particularly suitable pine that was bent to the ground and Lob the slacker. It became more popular when the loggers got competitive about distance. Thus, the appropriate trees got tagged with the label loblollies. Yes indeed, far from the sweet and innocent nature the name may have first implied.
