Penn looks like a damned fool.

Why do you care? If he wants to look like a fool, that's his prerogative.

CBS conveniently fails to mention that he was played like a grand piano.

It wasn't so apparent then that he was "played like a grand piano" until he returned and the second article you've linked came out.

Look......who said all actors are smart. Just like the rest of the population...some are and some aren't. Furthermore, because a certain element of the American public worships them, they have an inflated view of their importance. S. Penn is both dumb and has an inflated ego.

You mentioned earlier [and I can't remember your exact words] that you liked Penn and wonder why he's never found the right role. Well, the truth is he's not such a great actor. You don't see him in many parts because his acting capabilities are common knowledge in Hollywood. The mystique of S. Penn is for the benefit of middle America. He was probably an idiot from the day he was born, or at least since he married Madonna and fought with the paparazzi, and will be an idiot the day he dies.

However, he has a right as an American citizen to make a jackass of himself. And he has........very nicely.

The good/smart actors in Hollywood.....the T. Hanks, M. Damons, the C. Blanchetts, the J. Roberts etc are too busy plying their craft to be making themselves into spectacles.
