hmmm, an odd coincidence between 1960 and 2000.

In 1960 (a very close election), the Democratic Party chose a Northerner to run for President. In 1960, the most segregated region in the United States, was in the South. Democrats won most of those states, winning: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Maryland, and West Virginia (Mississippi was won by an Independent).

In 2000 (a very close election), the Democratic Party chose a Southerner to run for President. By chance, in 2000, the 5 most segregated metropolitan (>1M people) areas in the United States are in the Michigan (Detroit), Wisconsin (Milwaukee), New York (New York), Illinois (Chicago), and New Jersey (Newark). Al Gore won Michigan, Wisconsin, New York, Illinois, and New Jersey.

By the way, Eisenhower ordered the desegregation of Washington DC public schools, and used the 101st Airborne to insure that the schools in Little Rock Arkansas were desegregated.

When President Nixon became President, 70% of African American children in the South, attended all black schools. By 1970, it was ~18%.
