Here is an edited note from Bob Puff on Compuserve re testing hard drives.

"There is a program called QBench that I use for rating HDs. It is written by Quantum, but works on any drive.
Run it under DOS, with no software caching enabled. It gives you average access time, and effective thruput (not just the burst numbers you see the manufacturers use) .

My WD Caviar drive makes it up to about 4 megs/sec. I've got a old Maxtor that does 3, and an old quantum that does 1.5 "

Bob had commented that he had tested a JTS drive at about 1 meg/sec and I had asked which program he had used. When I get home and have time I want to check out my JTS Champ 2.0 gig to see if Bob's statement is generally true or if it seems to be isolated to just a system he tested..

I look forwared to others to comment who are more technically inclined than I if this program QBench is a fair test or if their are other programs that may be more realistic in evaluating a drive.
