The best compromise would be to follow the European model, and have the majority of conscripts serve as a reserve force, after basic training, with periodic calls for additional training. I suspect, though, that the professionalization of the armed forces was a good idea, above and beyond the libertarian motives of some supporters of a volunteer force.........
