re: Ericsson on EDGE

This Brazilian web site has good links at bottom of linked page:

With GPRS implemented, the network parts that facilitate EDGE are located in the Base Station System (BSS). All that is needed are EDGE-capable Transceiver Unit (TRU) plug-ins and some software updates. The addition of transceiver hardware is common when expanding networks. An operator need only install EDGE-capable TRUs instead of ordinary GSM TRUs in the BSS when implementing EDGE. The EDGE-capable transceiver units can simultaneously handle voice, GPRS and packet-switched EDGE. In all Ericsson RBS 2000 GSM macro radio base stations produced in or after 1995 only hardware additions using plug-in transceivers added to the radio base stations are needed. Only one TRU is usually needed per cell for coverage. The software required can be downloaded remotely and existing cell plans can be used. It doesn't even require a big staff - launching the network functions can be done by simply pressing a button! So the upgrade to EDGE is easy.
