If I ran a newspaper, I would prefer hiring from various segments of the population, as long as the hirees were competent, to make sure that there was no tunnel vision in the newsroom. If I had a multi- ethnic customer base in any business, I would want to make them feel that my firm was inclusive and sensitive to diverse cultures as a pubic relations gesture, at least. On a police force, I would want to enhance credibility with the various communities in a city by making an effort at diverse recruitment and promotion. As someone who cares about racial integration, I would like to see more blacks in visible positions of authority, and therefore I thought that making Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice important parts of the Bush Administration was good not only because they were well- qualified, but for its symbolic importance......
