Yes, and if they earned the spots, it would seem they deserve them. That is what a meritocracy is. However, if the school uses any other factors, like geographic diversity or legacies, to determine the composition of the student body, then racial diversity (as a weak factor) is also legitimate. (Legacies are the children of alumni who get preferential treatment. I know that Harvard and Yale accept legacies, I don't know about MIT.) It is possible for some of these other criteria to serve legitimate educational purposes, or to benefit the institution by increasing alumni loyalty........
