It becomes the norm, but there will always be reactions against the norm. In a free society one must tolerate (although not embrace) those who react against the norm. IMO that is how you know you are IN a free society- by looking at how people with unpopular ideas are treated. It's not a very free country that can say "Look how VERY free our folks who follow the norms are (but don't look at those guys in the gulag who don't like our idea of normal)!" :-) I can do analogies too.
