He was making an analogy, not slamming the whole ethnic group. He said the antagonists in Northern Ireland were like a couple of drunks who kept meaning to leave, but turning around for yet another. He did not say that all Irishmen were like that, or that all Irishmen were drunks, or anything else which was a real slur. Whereas Lott implied that he endorsed segregation, and that integration was responsible for our woes over the years. If you cannot figure out which is worse, even if a mere gaffe, and unintended, it is no wonder that you cannot distinguish between malign and benign forms of affirmative action........
