That's not what the letter said and on this particular issue, its important to mince words.

Why do you people continue to argue with the facts?
The letters words were to the effect of, "should you use WMD against us the president reserves the right to retaliate with ANYTHING in the United States' arsenal".

That's not what the letter said......it threatened with "the severest consequences"; that's not the same as
"retaliate with ANYTHING in the US arsenal"......not even close. And it was said in that way for a purpose.......it gave Bush Sr. the room to do what he wanted. There was no way in hell the US was going use nukes on Saddam and the Iraqi people.

Furthermore, you have a serious problem.....you hear what you want to hear and you interpret what you want to interpret. "Severest consequences" was not nuking Iraq, so stop trying to shove it down our throats.

In the last month Schwartzkopf has stated on "Hardball" that Saddam clearly got the message and there was no question what it meant.

The message he got is that he would have been removed from his office.......period. Saddam may be crazy but he ain't stupid.

Secondly, it was a ploy that may or may not of worked

Well, it may or may not have. Two things are known: (1) (I'll repeat, since you guys seem not to get it) The American leadership of the day believes it was crucial, and (2) We don't know what worked, but SOMETHING did, because he did not use WMD against us.

There is a lot of things military types believe......that doesn't mean its the gospel. You want to believe everything they say; go for it!

Saddam didn't use WMD because he's not stupid, the world was watching way too closely for his comfort, and he didn't want to lose his job.

So what's the big deal?

It is no big deal except that some liberals on this thread have suggested that Bush should take our nuclear weapons off the table, which would be 110% stupid. That's what the big deal is.

Mr. Bush best be careful how he bluffs. It could turn out to be a very big deal.
