Very interesting. Cheers for that...

I would like to take the opportunity to recommend two books by Eliot Pattison that touched me deeply about Tibet & China:

"The Skull Mantra"
amazon.com

"Water Touching Stone"
amazon.com

I am not sure that I can do justice to these books and their profound understanding of the cultures they portray. Possibly the best possible comparison is to Trevanian's "Shibumi", the cult novel that is a brilliant insight into the Japanese mind and values, thinly disguised as an intriguing spy/assassin novel.

In a similar manner, Pattison's books both start off with unexplained murders which a Chinese detective serving undetermined) time in a Tibetan labour camp is charged to solve. In the mountains of Tibet where superstition reigns and simple people strive to conserve their traditions under the Chinese rule, he has to put aside his traditional tools of investigation and contemplate Tibetan religion and values in order to find the killer.

I recommend these books highly.

(And now I see Pattison has written a third book, which has made my day <g> )
