I, and others, called for his resignation or replacement immediately. I give him the benefit of the doubt about what was in his heart, but I do not want someone who can be plausibly regarded as a closet racist in the leadership. I have said elsewhere why I think Clinton's remark is not comparable. (By the way, I defended Lott during the Citizens' Councils flap).....
