Its hard to come up with a President that has lead this country into a major war who was able to get re-elected

Ever heard of FDR? Since Kennedy was dead by 1964, it's hard to tell how he would have fared, but things looked favorable for him.

You can certainly say that Truman lost because of Korea and LBJ because of Vietnam. However, both these conflicts went badly - high casualties and no victory. It's tough to argue that Bush 41 lost because of the Gulf War.
