Sort of like bin Laden that way.
He is a reactionary. Longs for the "good old days" of his childhood. A classic "Conservative."
What, exactly, is freedom supposed to look like without democracy?
The Conservative warcry is "A Republic, not a Democracy!" In other words, no "Mob Rule!" A good point when dealing with "One Party" Islamists, who, once in power, kill or jail everyone else.
The Africans didn't want the colonial rulers.
Buchanan's position is that the Africans were better off with stability and order, instead of the Freedom they have now to be killed in Tribal Warfare. He thinks that they simply exchanged Colonial Rulers for Tribal Rulers, and got the worst of a bad bargain.
The US has no responsibility with regard to this,
Here Buchanan and the left find themselves as strange Bedfellows. It is the "Bastista for Castro" argument. Buchanan would tell you that we are not responsible for the situation in Islamic Countries, although we dealt with and/or encouraged the stability of regimes that were opposed to the Soviet Union, we did not invent these regimes. Buchanan thinks that we propped up a some of them, but that was a "Cold War" thing, and if they want to go Islamic under "Mob Rule" Democracy, it is certainly not in our interest.
The left wants them left along, not because they love the regimes, but in opposition to Bush. We read and see posted a lot of sentiment in favor of "Leave them alone, we don't know how to install Democracy!" |
