Liquor sales threatened by informal economy

Mexico, Dec 19, 2002 (El Financiero/SABI via COMTEX) -- The Mexican alcoholic
beverages industry is suffering from a 5% to 6% drop in sales this year, mainly
due to unfair competition from adulterated products and contraband, which
accounts for 2 out of 3 bottles sold. The industry has tried special offers,
discounts and the launching of new products to combat the threat, but is having
difficulty competing with the lower prices of the illegal products. Including
beer, sales this year in the legal industry will total 5.9bil liters, compared
to 5.5bil liter in 2001.
