>>costs INTC the same amount to pump out a higher MHz chip of a >>particular type as it does to pump out a lower MHz chip almost. the highest speed chips are typically from the center of the die and have the fewest imperfections and the lower speed chips are from the outside. The trick is to either sell all of the chips (regardless of speed) or make better dies so that the yield of high speed chips is sufficient. What Intel has done very well, so far, is to sell all the chips it made- form the highest to the lowest speed- at good prices. AMD and CYRX are hitting the low end hard so Intel is coming up with a new strategy. If AMD/CYRX can successfully pressure the high end as well then this could be very serious for Intel.
