Latest Clinton Gaffe Excused As Metaphor

WASHINGTON (Dec. 20) - Former President Bill Clinton last night compared the people of Israel to "greedy pawn shop owners" and the Palestinian people to "dirty camel jockeys" as peace talks broke down. He said both sides were so addicted to quarrelling that they had spurned the chance of peace.

"I spent an enormous amount of time trying to help the people in these lands get over 6000 years of religious fights," Mr Clinton told a group of assembled dignitaries from the Democratic National Committee.

Clinton's remarks about the two sides in the Middle East peace process acting like greedy barbarians drew quick and sharp criticism from some leaders in the Middle East last night, but were generally considered a metaphor by most major U.S. media outlets.

Clinton later apologized for the "tone" of his remarks.
