Tolerance and Respect
or
7-2 Decision

In a decision yesterday the Supreme Court of Canada struck down a Surrey school boards objection to inclusion of certain material in the classroom. The material in question was removed from the classroom at the request of certain parents, who held that their religious beliefs were infringed upon by the material. Other parents felt the material was age inappropriate for Grade 1 and 2 children.

The court ruled that the material demonstrated and discussed tolerance and respect for others, that tolerance and respect were age appropriate for all children, even young ones.
The court held that any religious views expressed by the parents had no place in the classroom, schools must promote tolerance and respect and dignity for every child.

The first people to the podium to cheer on the court were teachers from the BC Federation of Teachers.
The court ruling did not require the school board to use the material. The school board may still reject the material, but they will have to come up with reasons other than the ones struck down by the Supreme Court.
The material was not age inappropriate, it taught tolerance, and respect, the court held that this is age appropriate for all children.
The court held that the views of certain groups will not be considered when addressing the needs of the public school curriculum, schools must teach tolerance and respect, every child must be treated with dignity.
