There are about 3 million Iraqis living outside the country now. A number of high level defections have occurred over the past decade. Some of the most significant were Khidhir Hamza who worked in Saddam's nuclear weapons development program ( tms.physics.lsa.umich.edu ), Adnan Ihsan Saeed al-Haideri- an engineer who worked on the construction of secret underground research facilities ( iraq.net >, Hussein Kamal, the former head of Iraq's Military Industry and Saddam's son-in-law ( cns.miis.edu ).

Re. Stalin, Idi Amin, and Pol Pot:
Stalin ruled a country too powerful for us to take on. Amin and Pol Pot ruled small back-water countries where we had no US interests. The Persian Gulf, due to its massive oil reserves and production, is an important region for the whole world. It is not in our interest to allow a hostile power to emerge which will control this area.
