The leaders of Gulf states are calling on the United States and its allies to find a peaceful solution to the standoff with Iraq.

Gulf leaders say Iraq's independence must be respected.

Officials from six Gulf states have begun talks in Qatar.

The nations, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain, are holding their annual summit as the region moves closer to possible war.

The host of the meeting, Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, says United Nations weapons inspectors should carry out their mission in Iraq as quickly as possible.

He says the standoff between Iraq and the United States should be resolved peacefully and within the framework of the UN Security Council.

The Gulf states are calling on the Iraqi Government to respect the resolutions of the United Nations and open the way to the lifting of the international sanctions.
