Apple's real market share growth in its FY 2002
Top Vendors, Worldwide PC Shipments, CY 4Q01 - 3Q02 (Thousands of Units)
Apple's market share actually increased slightly in its fiscal year 2002, according to IDC estimates for worldwide PC unit shipments during that period. Here are the numbers:
Rank Vendor Curr yr Curr yr Prev yr Prev yr y/y shipment y/y mkt shipments mkt share shipments mkt share growth share growth ---- --------------- --------- --------- --------- --------- ------------ ------------ 1 Hewlett-Packard 21991 17.01% 24834 18.88% -11.45% -9.87% 2 Dell 19503 15.09% 16649 12.66% 17.14% 19.23% 3 IBM 7866 6.09% 8892 6.76% -11.54% -9.96% 4 Fujitsu Siemens 5867 4.54% 6200 4.71% -5.37% -3.69% Apple 3101 2.40% 3087 2.35% .45% 2.24% ** Gateway 2706 2.09% All Vendors 129250 100.00% 131549 100.00% -1.75%
Notes: 1. Figures for Apple are actual unit shipments for the quoted periods, obtained from Apple 10-Qs. 2. Figures for Gateway, excepting those from 4Q00, are actual unit shipments for the quoted periods, obtained from Gateway earnings releases. 3. No unit shipment figures at all were published by Gateway in its 10-Q for 4Q00. Thus, I do not show full y/y comparisons for Gateway. However, since Gateway sold more units in the last three quarters of the year-ago period than they did in all four quarters of the current period, their y/y performance was obviously far worse than any of its competitors. 4. Figures for Hewlett-Packard in CY 4Q01 and 1Q02 are combined figures for HP and Compaq. 5. Figures for all other manufacturers are "preliminary estimates" from IDC: 3Q02 Message 18170604 (10/17/02) 2Q02 Message 18004955 (7/18/02) 1Q02 Message 17368052 (4/19/02) 4Q01 Message 16974805 (1/17/02) 6. In June 2002, IDC revised its method of estimating the number of "white box" units sold worldwide, which would have affected their estimates of total units sold in 4Q01 and 1Q02: idc.com This change should have had a roughly equal effect on calculations for each of the individual boxmakers listed here. 7. IDC apparently overwrote it's 2Q02 URL with data from its 3Q02 URL, so I can no longer link directly to their source data for CY 2Q02, which is why I link to my extracts of it rather than directly to their source. |
