Evangelist follows the creed of crude
By Todd Mason
Star-Telegram Staff Writer

WILLOW PARK - Harold "Hayseed" Stephens says God told him where to find oil in Israel.

"The greatest oil field in the world is at the southwest end of the Dead Sea," says Stephens, a Willow Park oilman and evangelist.

But Stephens, who has visited Israel 108 times since his quest began in 1982, doesn't have much to show for his conviction. He led a drilling venture in 1985 that ended in equipment failure. He hasn't turned a drill bit in the Middle East since. Israel took back his leases last year for lack of progress.

For the past several years, Stephens, 63, has kept the venture alive by selling shares in his penny-stock company, Ness Energy International. The chief audience: the faithful. In appearances at evangelists' meetings, Stephens claims that his oil find will change the balance of power in the Middle East.

Ness stockholders have little to show for their faith. Shares in the company moved as high as $2.90 in 1999 but closed Friday at 30 cents in bulletin-board trading......
