Yes BB was hired to win football games. He won football games and become a icon in his culture. Based upon my understanding of human nature, where one particular thing is the most important aspect of a person's life, if a person becomes successful at it, you become a God, and all knowing. And "football" unfortunately, IMO, was one of the "biggest" of a substantial number of people down there during his time.. And a Bear become God. <g>.
So if BB would have been strong enough, had enough courage, was a risk taker to question segregation publicly, he would have started people thinking and COULD have a been a force in desegregation. During Wallace's time, he was established enough, IMO, to be insulated from much criticism . And he would of become even MORE succesful by integrating his team. Risk takers are the change makers.
So not until SC went there and beat the sh!t out of them with an integrated team did things change.. SO that PROVES that football was BIGGER than segregation. IMO, INTEGRATED football probably has done as much to move race relations ahead as anything in that particular part of the country..
"Remember the Titans" , a movie about desegregating high school football in the Carolinas, I believe, is very good, worth renting if you haven't seen it...
Sports IMO brings people together..
Color is forgotten in Competition...
