I think you should deal with my actual responses, which did involve stereotypes applicable to the postulated situation, but "worked". However, I will go a step farther:

Well, we have been trying to get the two sides together for some time, but they seem to be kind of lazy and easily distracted. In negotiations, they are like a couple of kids fidgeting, daydreaming, and generally restless to go to recess, instead of having to do the hard work of making peace. Like Tom Sawyer, they would like to lay around and have the other kids do the work for them........

Yep, a one line apology would have sufficed......
