Arnor, Gondor or The Numenoreans The two kingdoms that the Numenoreans set up in Middle Earth were known as Gondor and Arnor. Arnor was in the north and Gondor was in the south. In the LOTR Minas Tirith is the principle city in Gondor, Minas Tirith means "Tower of the Guard", that was not always the name of the city. In the south the Numenoreans would build three principle cities. The cities were called Minas Ithil (Tower of the Moon), Minas Anor, (Tower of the Sun) and Osgiliath (Citadel of Stars). The Tower of the Moon still exists and is called Minas Morgul in the LOTR, (Tower of Dread). Osgiliath has been abandoned, sitting on an island in the river Anduin it was considered indefensible. The principle city of Gondor north of the Anduin is renamed from Minas Anor to Minas Tirith to reflect it's status as a warhold. Both Kingdoms, Arnor and Gondor were the result of Elendil and the Faithful escaping the destruction of Numenor. Numenor was destroyed when Ar Pharazon the Golden led a flotilla to Vala and stepped onto the undying lands. When this happened the Valar again laid down their guardianship and the world was changed, Afterwards the Undying Lands became unreachable for all men.
