KEY PROJECTS AWARDED; INCLUSION IN RUSSELL 2000 INDEX;
VIRGINIA-ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR AWARD

ROANOKE, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 24, 1997--Optical Cable Corp. (NASDAQ:OCCF)
announced today that it has been awarded three different key projects. The first
project is to initially supply 1,200,000 feet of BX04 rugged "breakout" style cable
to a large national department store chain with more than 2200 stores.

This cable shall be used for point-of-sale data collection to improve store
efficiency. As all retail store operations try to become more efficient and
productive, fiber optic cable can play a critical roll with high speed data
transmission and clear signal reception. Point-of-sale information for inventory
control is critical to keeping each store location stocked with just the right
amount of product. This market segment is just starting to grow with a large global
potential. The second project is to supply 100,000 feet of D24 "military style"
cable to England for use on the Formula 1 race car circuit. TV broadcasting of
sporting events is a very large global business. As the demand for higher quality
pictures and digital transmission become standard, the demand for fiber optic cable
in this market segment will grow rapidly. "The military fiber optic cables from
Optical Cable Corporation are the strongest in the world and most suited for this
remote broadcasting application," said Robert Kopstein, President and CEO.

The final project is for approximately 1,000,000 feet of a military cable for South
Korea. It is to be used for a security application along the boarder with North
Korea. The commercial market for security applications shall also grow rapidly. As
more residential neighborhoods become concerned with security on a global basis,
fiber optic cable will be used as a low cost solution for an impenetrable defense
against intruders. Fiber optic cable with sensors can provide for a lower cost
solution than using guards and is much more reliable on a 24 hour basis. Optical
Cable Corporation shall be one of the stocks that make up the RUSSELL 2000 INDEX as
of July 1, 1997. "We believe that this accomplishment should be announced to all of
our shareholders," stated Robert Kopstein.

Robert Kopstein and Optical Cable Corporation were awarded the
Virginia-Entrepreneur of the Year award for technology. This program was founded
and produced by Ernst & Young LLP. The Eleventh National Awards Program will be
held in Palm Springs on November 20-23. "We are more than honored with this great
recognition and look forward to meeting so many other entrepreneurs at the national
level," said Robert Kopstein. This news release contains certain forward looking
statements that are subject to risks and uncertainties that could cause actual
results to differ materially from those projected or forecasted.
