Byrd may have put down the sheet in favor of the sword. How's this going to sit with the African American vote?

If you are in possession of any serious idea about that, you should post it here. Or, perhaps, better, to whichever place on SI that it might actually be relevant.

Last time I checked, Lott's problem was not about something he did in the 40s; rather some things he did in the 80s and 90s. Byrd repented his KKK affiliations a very long time ago.

As, to repeat, how it plays out, I have no idea whatsoever. I knew, a lot of folk knew, about Trent Lott's recent past and had decided the media and the political pros just decided to ignore it so long it didn't matter. Why the comment at the Thurmond party should convert it into suddenly mattering, I have no idea.
