Bulger Will Not Need Spinal Surgery

Rams quarterback Marc Bulger will miss the team's finale next Monday night because of a spinal injury that his coach says will not require surgery or harm his career.

Bulger was hurt when he was sacked early in Sunday's 30-10 loss at Seattle. The spinal injury was described as three compression fractures. Matt Matava, one of the team physicians, said Bulger should be healthy in six-to-eight weeks.

"There's no danger to him whatsoever," St. Louis coach Mike Martz said. "It just requires rest. It's painful for him, but it's not going to hinder his career or affect him in any way."

Matava said there is no risk for long-term side effects.

"This is not a career-threatening injury and he should not miss any time in minicamp," Matava said.

Martz said backup Jamie Martin, who played most of Sunday's game, had his knee drained and is a question mark for the home game against San Francisco. The Rams also have quarterback Scott Covington.

Linebacker Tommy Polley will miss the game after aggravating a high ankle sprain. Defensive end Grant Wistrom has a hairline fracture in his leg near the knee and is out. Wistrom will not need surgery.
