NEW YORK, Dec 23 (Reuters) - Discount retailer Target Corp. (NYSE:TGT - News) on Monday said sales at its stores open at least a year fell well below its expectations for the third straight week, hurt by dismal sales of apparel and sporting goods.

In another ominous sign for the retail sector, Target said in a prerecorded call after the market closed that same-store sales for December so far are sharply off its growth forecast of between 3 percent and 5 percent.

U.S. retailers including Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE:WMT - News) have reported widely disappointing sales for the holiday shopping season,
as a murky economy and threat of war with Iraq whittles away at consumer confidence.

Shares of the Minneapolis-based company, which operates its namesake discount stores as well as the Mervyn's and Marshall Field's department stores, fell 4.5 percent to close at $28.54 on the New York Stock Exchange.
