Perhaps you can see what people outside the US are worried about. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I've been thinking about Trent Lott. Perhaps he didn't do all that badly. When his great, grand mother looked back she was turned into a pillar of salt --- when he looked back he was only turned into scapegoat.
