What possible reason can there be to edit 800 pages out of a crucial document

According to a NYT article I read a few days ago, (and no, I am not going to spend time finding the link,) the US edited out info crucial to building a bomb. Syria was pissed, I understand. :>) Maybe they can get that info somewhere else, but why spread it if they don't have to?
