Begala defends 'It's Still the Economy, Stupid'

Begala's rhetoric is based on the Politics of Personal Destruction -- as you would expect, since he was one of the creators of the concept (along with James Carville and Bill Clinton). On Crossfire he repeatedly takes cheap, personal shots at the president. Unfortunately, the conservatives on Crossfire (Novak and Carlson) are themselves so weak Begala often comes across as having made his points when the reality there was just nobody to counter them.

I saw the particular exchange and was totally frustrated that there was no one there to challenge Begala. While the transcript looks as though Novak DID challenge him (somewhat), Novak is literally unable to get his words out. Where is Pat Buchanaan when you need him?

One thing about Begala: He comes to the table with his data in hand. You will NOT find him caught without fodder for debating the issue. His research is ample in quantity, but qualitatively weak, based largely on invective, as liberal positions, ultimately, are.

The book is exceptionally weak, and is more a forum for Begala's ad hominem criticism than it is an interpretation of economic policy.

The Democrats have begun to look particularly foolish with these personal attacks on Bush. It has renewed my faith in the American People that they seem to attracted to Bush's integrity and competence and able to ignore the lies and personal insults of the Democrat party.

I continue to believe the Democrat party is dying as a result of both the tactics and the hollowness of their promise.

Clinton's true legacy may well be that foundation of the Democrat party began rapidly crumbling under his leadership. All we would need to finish it off would be Hillary running in '04, which may be what we're getting ready to see..
