Good to see disagreement with me on this stuff, Gottfried. I've got Win98SE on all the boxes in the house, save one: A present to my wife of a couple years ago. That one has XP, and hasn't yet demonstrated more stability than my other boxes.

Then again, I don't push the computing envelope as much as I used to, while Wifey does graphics-intensive things like photo editing, etc.

All my machines have maxed memory, and nothing is less than 25GB on disk; so I've got all the "supporting cast" taken care of already. I guess a main difference is, I don't feel cramped in my computing space anymore. Five boxes on a LAN, about 160GB disk and all the memory I need. Only "crashes" I suffer from now is when the cable modem goes down and I immediately regress to the Stone Age; I feel like I should be wearing animal skins at that point.

I'm rather hoping your situation is more typical of the computer-buying public in general.

Do you have statistical breakdowns of IC chip manufacture by end-use segment? I can't seem to find the ones I used to use, as I'm not at home and can't reproduce my web search (apparently). I thought PC chips were about 15% of all chips at present, but Bill Tippett has evidence of much higher fraction, closer to 50%. I like his number better, actually; then there is some hope that the next upturn will be good enough for me to diversify my AMAT position. At present I'd be forced to take a huge loss...
